Why is it that no one wants to talk about racism? Although it can be an uncomfortable conversation, it is one that needs to be had. Racism is a cancer that has been allowed to spread throughout the world for too long. Unfortunately, this cancer has become more evident in the church and has caused the Light of the church to dim.
The need for change is now.
In order for us to kill this cancer and break the cycle of racism, we must acknowledge that a wrong has been done. There must be reconciliation, which only comes through confession and repentance. Some may be thinking, “I’m not personally responsible for Black oppression.” That may be true, but the desire is that our White brothers and sisters acknowledge that a wrong has been done, and that systemic racism still exists.
What can we do to reconcile? In my opinion, Black Americans have been acting out Matthew 18:15-18, but with little to no avail. I think our Black and White Pastors and leaders should hold open, transparent discussions in their church and dialogue about historical and current issues. Also, I believe that our White brothers and sisters should tell their congregations that they stand with the Black community, and give reasons why others should, too. We appreciate all of our brethren coming alongside us and telling us that they’re with us, but we really need everyone to tell their circle of influence.
In order to break the cycle of systemic racism, we need each other. 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 confirms that we are the Body of Christ. If one part of the Body hurts, the whole Body is affected. The Body has been wounded far too long. Let’s work together. Stand up for each other. Shower one another with agape love. When the Body is once again fully functioning, we will experience the power and glory of God like never before and a revival will sweep this world.
